DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU! (Betfair theft)
« on: Tue, 02 March, 2010, 06:48 »
I have just returned from the hospital after seeing my consultant about my back problems, rheumatism and general old age, and to say i am in deep shock is an understatement.

Having left full MF pro churning away for a few hours in my absence imagine my horror to return only to find that those nice people at Betfair had helped themselves to £80 of my hard earned cash! >:(

The charming people from Betfair had made a data request charge for exceeding the limit on the 26th of February £77.60. This was in addition to a £4.86 they had stolen  a week previously.  To say I’m a tad miffed would be like asking for Tiger Woods for his autograph just after he wrapped his vehicle around an innocent lamppost!

To avoid this happening to you should
*Try not to monitor more than 4 different markets at any one time Ie Tennis, football, Greyhounds, and  Horses. Then FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS

Sadly with my limited mental capacity for all things technical, I had not fully understood the manual until Alfaman put it more baby language.

NEVER click the START MARKETS button bottom left side of the platform.
If you make this fundamental error all the markets will turn green (active) and you will then be able to potentially exceed the request limit faster than you can say “where f….k has my money gone”! Especially if you have more than 4 different markets being monitored and your markets list being monitored is about the height of your ceiling!

Instead..... go to “settings” /”monitoring options” and click “start monitoring events …..mins from the beginning” Then place in the box the number of minutes you would like monitoring to begin. BUT BE WARNED  if this is more than a few minutes (preferably les than 10 minutes) you may be in for a nasty shock email one day from the lovely people at Betfair

After you have done this market will automatically get monitored at the appropriate time WITHOUT HAVING TO CLICK START MARKETS this assumes that you are in “my markets”  (top left of the screen) not “all markets”
Also remember not to simultaneously monitor markets on the Betfair web site as this will add to your data requests.

The connections monitor will show your data requests and this should be comfortably within the green (safe) area

To compound my own problem I was monitoring on 2 computers, one in real money mode, the other is test mode. I was not on the Betfair web site either. Both request limits were set to 10, however no audible alarm sounded and no indication was there to suggest the limit had been breached; however the monitor was hovering closely to the centre band and going a reddish colour.

My own stupidity and lack of understanding cost me £80, please don’t let this happen to you!

BF winner, your advice is certainly valuable, sorry about the loss of your money.

But what were your "Connection Monitor" settings, i.e. the request limit and whether "Prevent exceeding the limit" was on?
Always try your triggers in Test Mode before switching to real money!

Hi OXA
Thanks for the commiserations. The request limit was set to 10 on both computers and as displayed on the attachment
I had "automatically prevent exceeding the limit" turned on (TICKED), I have never turned this off, since even i can understand the implications of such a move!
Sadly it did not help me on this occasion.

On future builds it may be worth considering by default not to allow the start all markets function to operate with out a massive warning coming up on the screen saying that "This action is extremely dangerous and hazardous to your betting bank in the event that your Data Request Limit is breached, please refer to the help guide to ensure you fully understand the implications of such a move before switching
 All the markets on.

I think I've seen one more of this instance for this year.
Gambling is a lifestyle.
