FRANCE and betfair PROBLEM
« on: 14 May 2010, 19:27 »
hi
i have just read this in betfair.

On 6 April the French parliament passed a law relating to online gaming which came into effect on the 13th May, 2010. This law prevents us from allowing customers to access www.betfair.com and associated sites in order to bet or use any of our products from France or any of its territories. Please note that this restriction also applies to customers that may have accounts registered in a different location but attempt to use their Betfair account whilst they are visiting France.

Well here in Greece online gambling is prohibited by the law too but since there is no official blocking of betfair.com(and other online gambling sites) then basically there is no problem. Despites the law in Greece acts very strange(it is blind justice in a bad way)  it will be a huge scandal if there is an arrest of anyone about gambling online...

In France i think they are more serious and i am really curious to see how they gonna stop French people for playing online.

They will use BetFair remotely, via other servers hosted anywhere in the globe.
French Bank accounts connected to Betfair accounts... this is the problem, solved only via bank accounts in offshore countries.

I think it's ridiculous how they have made it law as online gambling makes no difference to them and the same goes for places in US. If anything they should just ask Betfair for some of there profits brought in from there excessive Premium Charges.

We straight away pay 5% commission on our winnings for doing something that is risky and using our own hard earned money. Further to this IF your one of those users above you will paying Premium Charges of 15%/20% forget which now... then your paying your tax's to gamble at something that is high risk and fun for a lot of us.

It's a really messed up world - just hope the UK don't follow them as they plan to do with the Piracy Policies (off-topic), but they do like to copy the French on somethings. I guess this would be quite a task as Betfair would have to move as that's based in  the UK.

How about using VPS and accessing BetFair on a remote server whose physical location is outside France?

I live in Spain, and was unable to access my betfair account because of the French restrictions. My server is routed through France hence the problem. After much name calling to the lovely people at Betfair, I can use my account now, but i can see this causing a lot of people quite a bit of aggravation!
This time next year, we will all be paying Betfair premium charge commission rates!

You're never a loser until you quit trying.

hi
it's not that betfair that has a problem with france, it is france that has the problem with betfair, france and some other countries do not allow certain gambling in there country.

Because it is illegal under French law, then it will still be illegal if you can use a VPS outside France, if you personally are located in France.

It's like the UK lotto, where it is illegal to play the lotto in Spain, so if you are on holiday there and you use your UK account to buy tickets, you will not receive any prizes should your ticket be successful, or any refunds if not.

I tried using VPN when I was in Italy and seems like BF ran normal. Though there are times that I get disconnected. I guess it is normal and it is fine with me though. As long as I can play anywhere, it won't be a problem. Will be going to France next week. Will check VPN there and will let you guys know.

You will be able to use a VPS located in an allowed country while you are in France, but it will still be illegal under French law and the possibility remains that winnings will be confiscated if the subterfuge is discovered - same situation re. Lottery if you are in Spain and use your UK account to buy tickets.
