SWITCHING FROM XP TO WINDOWS 7 .........PROBLEM
« on: Sat, 17 September, 2011, 06:32 »
Having just shelled out an obscene amount of money to improve memory and processor speed, by buying a new laptop, i have also had to swallow hard and switch to windows 7.

I cannot tell you how much I hate windows 7 which by XP standards seems slow and illogical.

The first problem is finding the log files.  By default when installing MF PRO the logs are placed usually in c:/Program Files /Marketfeeder pro 6/ logs /triggers. Having had a platform merrily working all night normally (as far as I can tell) i wanted to check some log files.

However every time i click on a trigger file i get "the system cannot find the path specified"

Navigating to the logs (above) reveals no sign of any of the triggers in the file where they are supposed to be written. There is a file called "triggers" but this is as empty as a nuns night life, and only contains the variables folder which is empty. Nothing in the action log folder either completes my frustration. What a pile of JUNK windows 7 is!

How the hell can this happen?
Any observations / answers appreciated, before i reinstall XP on this £1600 Laptop!

hi
js, had a problem finding them, he found them here.
C:\Users\[Current user]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\MarketFeeder Pro 6\events
on my laptop it is in c:\users\win7 and as above

BUT, i find it a lot easier to extract mfp to D drive and run it from there, then all your logs are as before, in one place

Seems like MF pro doesn't have rights to write to the Program Files directory.
Run it as Administrator or re-install into directory outside the Program Files one.

Well done Guys
That’s the first problem overcome. I re installed into my documents and all the logs are there now.
I cannot understand how an improvement to the mighty XP can be this apology for an operating system called windows 7!
Now all i have to overcome is the 10 minutes it takes to switch from one platform to another!
UNBELIEVABLE!

hi
you would still be better to create a folder on your D drive, for the bot etc.
because if you ever have problems with windows etc and have to reinstall, they only have to format C drive, thus leaving your bot etc untouched on D drive.
or better still, buy a 16 gb flash card and install your bots etc in that and run all your bots and triggers from the flash card, then you can use the flash card on any computer if you have problems.

Windows 7 became more "server" oriented platform with more security. So ordinary software doesn't have rights to write to the folder when it could be executed from. We are going to deal with this in 7th version.

Methinks you should call it The 7th Heaven version, because we can all only dream about it.

Hi Mc bee
I was going to do as you suggested but no D drive.
I do have a dedicated partition with 5 gb free on the lenovo (ibm) recovery drive partition.
My flash drive experience suggests that delays and hanging could possibly get a touch worse if running 3 platforms.
Will the partition do you think?

hi
they normaly set 2 drives, C and D.
check with however supplied the laptop to see if it is ok to use the partition, as this might be for restoreing only.
if you have a flash card, this will speedup your laptop with readyboost.

Hi Mcbee
I managed to install into the partition but the logs after 1 day were reducing available space to 0 so I have complained to the vendor about the performance and discovered and interesting development.
WINDOWS 7   64 BIT !

My 8gb of ram purchased with the laptop will not work until I upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit. It’s a shame this was not mentioned before I bought it.   I now have to re install windows 7 along with everything else in order to have the capability of running the 8gb of RAM. MAX ram usable on 32 bit is 2.5 GB of ram.

Anyone suffering a slow response and crashes may find this information helpful as the 64 bit is designed for those who use trading platforms, and need the multiple tasks and the memory that these platforms demand to work seamlessly

hi
when you reinstall, create 2 drives, 1 for windows working etc and 1 for all your bot usage.
i do not have this problem because i only have 2 gb memory, but the company that installed win 7 created the 2 drives.
