Back-testing
« on: 01 May 2011, 20:51 »
Hi All,

I'm new to trigger/automated betting and was hoping I could get some advice. I understand that version 7 of Marketfeeder Pro will contain some new functionality that will allow users to backtest their triggers using historical data such as that provided by Fracsoft. I was wondering how you guys currently back-test? Any particular software or do people prefer to back-test using their own code? Sorry if this has been discussed here before but I haven't found any posts on back-testing in the forum (or on the web in general for sports betting) - maybe I should be searching for a different term?

Cheers,

Dave

I'd also be interested to hear what others are using for this purpose.   :)

I don't use any form of back testing. There have been over 70 horse races during the last two days and triggers can be tested using the training mode or using minimum stakes in real time.

There is no substitute for using real markets with real money. MFP makes it very clear that the training mode does not accurately represent real markets and its fundamental purpose is to see if a set of triggers works or if individual triggers conflict with each other. As far as this mode is concerned, MFP lead the field and they have never pretended that their software does anything but this.

You are probably aware that I have little faith in past statistics, especially if one seeks to apply them to one football match, horse race, etc. in isolation, so I don't think that Fracsoft would suit me. Having said that, I am also totally opposed to graphs/charts so I suppose I must be a little odd.

The thing I am most looking forward to seeing in the new version is the facility to write triggers and analyse them independently of running the software and having to be connected to Betfair. I have made a printed copy of the trigger screen and "exploded" the individual dropdown menus as a training aid for myself. Also, I have finally made a printed copy of the manual. At my age I find it far more convenient to learn from a"book" rather from flipping between computer screens. Hopefully, I can now begin to get into the more intricate aspects of triggers and make progress.

I find the whole concept of trigger betting fascinating and will continue to enjoy it even if I don't make too much money :)

Please note, BetFair is seems to be currently OFFLINE
