Solid state drive benefits using MFP
« on: 22 Jan 2014, 23:40 »
Hi,

Has anyone had experience using a solid state drive in conjunction with MFP ?
I'm just wondering if the extra speed is of help. I'm guessing it's an overkill as we
are not dealing with large databases where SSD come into their own.

Look forward to your comments as I am about to have a PC built from scratch.
The extra cost is not a concern. I'm only interested from a performance angle.

Any comments much appreciated
Thanks

Hi,

I've been using SSDs for a few years. The benefits I have found are; computer is much quieter, programs and data load much quicker, computer runs much cooler, disk never needs defragging. In other words everything runs better than with an old fashioned spinning disk.

I don't think there would be other benefits that are specific to MFP though.

The most critical thing for MFP is your internet connectivity. The faster it is and the better ping you can get to the betfair website the better. This becomes even more critical when betting in-play.

What does this have to do with the original question about solid state drives  ???

Hi flanna

what 1oser meant is that to place bets that matters is a good internet connection, so the placement of bets will not help much the SSD.
For all the work that the HD MFP need to do, then ... yes the performance is much better whith SSD Drives.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the comments and a further source who places millions of transactions per year confirms what you have been saying and that is there is no advantage speed wise in placing bets by using SSD.
Cheers

One advantage that a SSD has over the conventional one in respect to using MFP, is it takes a short time to reboot. Betfair can cause a few problems with those awful bet session token timeout messages. and a quick reboot is helpful.

Save your money and rent a server instead!

Tupp,
Never a truer word was spoken. Hardware depreciates faster than
a Jimmy Saville signed autobiography. :)
Not to mention the added cost of repairs, periodical reinstallation of Windows
and hours/days/months of frustrating software issues.
All of which should be accounted for under operating costs.
Thanks for the timely reminder as I had already embarked on a journey to
free up my life from clutter.
I will look into it. Any suggestions as to which service is reliable ?

I am renting a server using Windows 8 operating system (I am using fsdata). Right now I'm having a sunny holiday in Gran Canaria with poor internet connection. MFP is running   on the server, solid as a rock, I watch it a coupple of times a day.

Sunny Spain eh? some people know how to live !
I suppose it is a VPS you are subscribing to and
I wondered where it is located and monthly costs
if I may be so bold. I am guessing it is best to develop
triggers on a home based pc or laptop and run the trigger
realtime on a vps.

Yes!

It's a VPS and I pay ~27 Euro/month and it's located in my home country (Sweden). You can do both  - develop the trigger on your local or directly on the "remote screen". I modified a trigger yesterday from Gran Canaria directly on my VPS with poor internet connection - works great!

Thanks Tupp, I also imagine the server will be of a high spec.
I'll be looking for a suitable service here in sunny England.  :)
