Timing and bots
« on: 25 Oct 2014, 20:15 »
Hi, a newbie and trying to automate some triggers elsewhere on this site. The reason for this post though is to discuss timing of bet placement in horse and greyhound racing and  to hear others thoughts.

I've always found the biggest downfall of bots is the need for a rigid time to place bets. As we all know the actual time a race starts is far from rigid :(

I live in AUS, am a pro bettor, and work the local market from 12:00 lunchtime to 9:30pm each day. During the week many market pools never reach more than $1500. You virtually have to watch every race live and watch for the last horse or dog to go into the barrier to see how much volume has been traded, and if over your threshold snap a bet on. My betting is price/vol targeted, not Form/Ratings based. It's those extra 10 secs for another market refresh that can make all the difference, with a selection's price having a sudden reversal or such like, that gives me an edge.

I've always said that the ultimate bot would be time intuitive, sensing when the start will be about to start. Solve that problem, software developers, and you'll be on a winner. You can back test systems based on last matched prices, but the reality is never that easy.

I'd be interested in any views of how others cope with this scenario?

You could work from the statistics on delays for races in particular venues probably? Get an average and use it in your triggers.
Always try your triggers in Test Mode before switching to real money!

Oxa, do you know of any official database of start time delays? I'm not familiar with any. That raises another question, I rely on Betfairs historical files for back testing, which are notoriously full of errors. Can MFPro be programmed to record to excel the race name, date, runners, Back & SP prices after Close?
Cheers for your response

I found some data for 9 months:

For that sample, the average delay times were:
 AUS.....86 secs
 FRA....234 secs
 GB.....100 secs
 NZ......79 secs

Wow! That seems to be a blow out. Would using VPN be a good idea for users in France?
Automatic isn't always everything.

Please note, BetFair is seems to be currently OFFLINE
