Value Graphing of raw Betfair data
« on: 16 May 2012, 16:37 »
I thought I would start a topic for discussion.
Now we all know that  bets made on Betfair are recorded and every week 2 CSV files are made available - one for all horseracing and one for all other sports.  These files can be downloaded from: http://data.betfair.com/, they are free, provided you have accumulated at least 100 betfair points.

To get anything useful you need to separate out the sports and then sort each file by the odds.  I believe the latest Excel  64-bit will load the entire file, but I have always used Access to filter the data and then export the portion of interest to Excel for further analysis.

I have carried this out for the Greyhound BAGS data.  The first thing to do is to query the Access table using the Event ID for greyhounds of 4339.  The first problem you will notice is that all the greyhound data is lumped together eg. Placed, Forecast, Evening cards, Televised Cards, Aussie & NZ cards etc in a more or less haphazard order.  So the next operation required is to add further queries to reduce the table to BAGS only - you can get rid of the Forecasts, Televised Cards & To be Placed using simple Access queries.  Unfortunately, I haven't discovered how to remove the Aussie/NZ data as they share the same Event ID as the rest.  So I delete these manually.

Here is a link for how to use the Access database for those unfamiliar with the program:http://www-rohan.sdsu.edu/~infosys/ist/resource/csv_inAccess.pdf

When you have the BAGS data only then you may be able to Select all and copy to a blank spreadsheet in Excel.  My older system wouldn't do this, so I had to copy in several stages.

When in Excel you will probably find that the number data is showing an error because there is a hidden character in front, this can be easily sorted using the Help that will appear.  You can now select the odds column and sort ascending.  This can then be formulated in another column to show the profit or loss for a flat bet of 2 units and then a cumulative P/L calculated in the next column. This final column should then be graphed against the Odds column on the X-axis.  You may find some very interesting results if you carry this out.

Please note, BetFair is seems to be currently OFFLINE
