Power cut and trading with MF Pro
« on: 16 Jul 2013, 11:51 »
Hello all
I am looking at what to do when there is a loss of power (electricity outage) and / or loss of internet.

I am using MF Pro to trade horse races (open positions in the mornings, hedge off just before the off). Yesterday had a 12 hour power cut (just our house, no one else in the street).  Had a frantic time trying to close everything off using Betfair’s mobile app.

I have read this interesting discussion back in 2010:

http://community.welldonesoft.com/triggered-betting-10/my-worst-nightmare-but-could-it-also-be-yours!/

The options seem to be
1.   VPS
2.   Dongle internet connection

It seems as if Welldone software were thinking about offeing VPS but this did not / has not happened?

What do other mf pro traders do to cover themselves for loss of power and/or the internet goes down?

I would welcome any suggestions (the world of VPS is alien to me; can you get pay-as-you-go-internet-dongles?). My laptop appears to lose power quite quickly – I doubt whether it would last much more than 1.5 hours and so the dongle approach seems restricted.

Has Welldone done more work on the VPS or thought about an app that can be used to manage the position?

Finally, if the Betfair API trips off line – is there a way for mf pro to monitor this and start up again once Betfair has fixed it? Could a mf pro app have the functionality to exit all positions with one click etc etc?

Thank you for any help.
A nervous 75.

You just set up your own VPS.  www.tagadab.com is very good.  No input is required from Welldone.

I have a 3G broadband dongle that I use in emergencies.

IF API goes down, then MFPro picks it up again when it returns.  No user input required

Thank you for your (prompt) help.

The applicable option may be: SVS 1000? Is this what you are using? and would recommend the company, presumably?

How does it work? Do you download the mf pro software onto this server and then each day log on to the VPS and start up mf pro?

I link my platform's triggers to various text files - presumably I can upload these each day, too?

Okay, that's enough questions in one posting.  Will look into the the dongle idea also.

thank you once again.

I think the one I use has the 2G RAM, but I run other programs on it.  1G may be enough for MFPro on its own.  I have had no significant problems with the company, but there other suppliers available.

When you log in to your VPS you will see a Windows Desktop, with IE explorer and almost nothing else installed.  So using IE you can download and install anything you want (inc. a better browser - LOL).  You will find the internet speed is very high on the VPS.

You will be able to download any text or other files from an internet location, that may include your own computer. Easiest way to start would be to upload them to dropbox or similar.  You can use Windows Remote Desktop to log in, or the free logmein software.  There are other log in softwares available, that will include mobile versions.

Please note, BetFair is seems to be currently OFFLINE
