sel_place

Could someone answer a question on this variable please.
As I understand the manual, the expression r_1_sel_place should return 2 if the favourite ran second in the race just settled. The expression r_3_sel_place would return 1 if the third favourite won the race or 0 if it was unplaced.
Is my understanding correct?
The reason for this question is that I seem to be getting unusual results that bear no resemblance to the actual placings.
Would appreciate some help on this please.

Hi Bobh,

In a win market only one selection will be appointed a place, that is, the actual winner's sel_place will be equal to 1, while all other selections' places will be equal to 0.

In a place market, on the other hand, the number of places can be between 2 and 5.

As for your case, it is a mistake to think that r_1_sel_place will get you the place of the favourite. Here is why:

1. The r_1_ prefix refers to the current favourite, which is determined as the selection having the lowest back price. When the market is settled, all selections' prices are usually null, so this won't give you an accurate prediction of the favourite.

2. You are probably interested in the pre-off favourite and its winning place. In that case you will need to find it and check its place by using the following conditions:

Selection's Trigger Expression last_order is equal to 1
and Selection's Trigger Expression sel_place is ...

Thanks Oxa,

I was actually playing around with a trigger I had downloaded from the site in 2012 called "mixed-loss-recovery.mft". I had never tried it in the past, and was looking for something with which to amuse myself today. I don't know if someone had requested it or if it was an example provided by MFP.

In any case, I think it might need an update.

Hi again Oxa,

I have no idea what page, but I will try to attach the trigger.

Here's hoping!

My apologies Oxa.

If you've had a chance to look at this trigger, you will have realised that it is based on index order, and I was attempting to change it to betting order (ie rank).

It is the context of betting order that the sel_place caused me the problem.

I'd still like to try it using betting order if possible, so if I need to make a trigger request, please let me know.

Yes, I acknowledge that.

I'm not sure what exactly your goal is, but just replacing s_ with r_ won't do, and I guess it'll take some thinking to rework the trigger, so you might want to create a separate request for that.

Thank you Oxa. I appreciate your comments.

I will have a think about whether it is worthwhile taking up your time on something that was just a whim one afternoon.

I might follow it manually for a couple of days to see if it has any potential. I am certainly not a fan of loss recovery, but there are always exceptions............!
